The Change Toolbox

What is it?

A compilation of tools that can be used to reduce any behaviour that is causing an individual difficulties in their life.  (i.e. substance use, gambling, smoking, addictive behaviours, self-defeating behaviours in relationships, anger, self-management, etc.)

The tools are organized and developed according to the Stages of Change (From:  The Transtheoretical Model for Change, by Prochaska and DiClemente).

The tools are ideally meant to be done with a helper, so that discussion and exploration can happen.  However, the tools are designed to be done by a participant/client alone if necessary.

Some tools are designed to provoke awareness and insight for the participant/client about his/her behaviour.  Hopefully the insight will increase the motivation to change.  Some tools are intended to develop plans to make change.  As motivation increases, these tools will support and guide the behaviour change.

Some considerations:

Not every tool in the Toolbox is for everyone, some may fit for one person and not for another.

A basic level of understanding of The Stages of Change Model is needed to use the tools effectively.  At the beginning of the Toolbox is a review of The Stages of Change Model and a detailed description of each stage.

Some example of tools include: ‘Identifying Values’, ‘Self-Awareness’, ‘Weighing the Pros and Cons’, ‘Making Non-Using Friends’, ‘Adding Cues for Healthier Alternatives’, ‘Making an Action Plan for Change’.
